Light at the end of the tunnel on data protection

Rumours are circulating that the Council will finally reach a general approach at its next meeting on 15-16 June with regards to the General Data Protection Regulation, and that it will be the Luxembourg Presidency that will get the mandate to engage in informal trialogues with the European Parliament. Pressure is high to conclude trilogues before the end of the year.

On 13 March, the Justice and Home Affairs Council reached a "partial general approach" on the understanding that nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. The text agreed includes a "one stop shop mechanism", which will provide for cooperation and joint decision-making between data protection authorities in cross-border cases, as well as the provisions related to personal data processing (principles, lawfulness, consent and special categories of personal data).
